Pipework Moling: Trenchless Technology
Moling is the cleanest, most efficient method of boring holes for drainage and utility feeds: gas, water, electricity, telecoms etc. It’s like keyhole surgery but for groundwork construction!
How does it work?
Two pits are generally excavated, one in each end, this is the extent of the digging, which is why moling is referred to as ‘trenchless’ technology. The first pit is dug to a sufficient depth and the mole is set horizontally on its ‘launch pad’ according to precise measurements, the second (destination) pit is sited and dug to the correct depth in order to receive the mole. (If the run is particularly long, pits may need to be dug at intervals).
The head of a cylindrically shaped, metal mole bores through the ground, not by way of a drilling motion but rather with a pneumatic pulse action which basically hammers its way forward. Once the mole breaks through, the bore hole can be enlarged fairly easily to a diameter suitable for whatever pipework needs to be accommodated.

Benefits of Pipework Moling
What are the advantages of pipework moling?
The advantages are obvious – minimal disruption and inconvenience. There is very little ground and surface disturbance, no need to rip up paths, paving, tarmac, concrete, etc. Therefore the process of moling is both fast and environmentally beneficial.
The proposed route is checked first prior to commencement for potential obstructions, especially pre-existing utilities like gas and electricity and for drainage pipework. This ensures the moling is completed as smoothly as possible.
Moling technology is especially useful when there is a requirement for excellent mains pressure: combination boilers or mains pressurized hot water tanks. Here at Home Heating we also recommend trenchless moling technology for the installation of electric cables, water pipes and gas pipes.
