Energy Saving and Conservation...
Home Heating are commited to using energy efficiently and installing energy efficient Central Heating systems
The type of heating system you install can have a major effect on the amount of fuel you use, the size of your fuel bills and the impact on the environment .
Whenever fossil fuels are burnt they produce carbon dioxide (CO²). This gas is a major cause of the greenhouse effect, which damages the ozone layer and results in global warming.
Good heating and hot water controls will help reduce harmful emissions, reduce your fuel bills and slow the climate change effects.
Energy conservation is important to us and we aim to install energy efficient central heating systems and save you money on your heating bills.
One of the most important energy saving measures you can is to keep your boiler serviced regularly, this will keep your energy consumption down, save you money and it will also keep you safe!
If your boiler is over ten years old, consider replacing it with a new energy efficient gas boiler. This will have the benefit of lowering your heating bills and reducing your impact on the environment.
Gas Safety and Energy Conservation
One of the most important energy saving measures you can is to keep your boiler serviced regularly, this will keep your energy consumption down, save you money and it will also keep you safe!
Do not assume that just because your boiler is working it doesn’t need any attention. Gas boilers should be checked and serviced every year to keep the efficient and safe.
If a boiler is not serviced annually, it and the flue will gradually start to get blocked and become less efficient. The boiler will have to work harder and use more gas to produce the same heat. This is bad for the environment and for your pocket and can be dangerous with a greater chance of build-up of carbon monoxide (CO) .
- So have your boiler serviced annually - the summer is the best time - GAS Safe (previously CORGI) registered engineers are often very busy during the winter and may not be able to fit you in easily.
- Replace old boiler: If your boiler is over ten years old replacing your old boiler with a high efficiency condensing boiler as well as a full set of heating controls could save you around £200 a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
- Timer / programmer: Make sure you are not wasting energy with in appropriately set heating controls eg set too high, set to go on or off to early or too late.
- Turn the thermostat down: By turning your thermostat down by 1oC you could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent (source: Energy Saving Trust).
- Thermostatic radiator valves: Fit thermostatic radiator valves in all rooms to allow you to control temperatures on a per room basis - bedrooms don't need to be as warm as living rooms, kitchens are often being heated by cooking so don't heat up rooms unnecessarily.
- Hot water cylinder: Lag your hot water cylinder and insulate hot water pipes. Tank jackets cost from very little, they're simple to fit ad could pay for themselves in 6 months.
- Insulate your loft - most heat escapes through your roof and recent recommendations are for much thicker insulation than.
- Reduce drafts - Check for drafts around doors and windows (including letterboxes) and insulate if necessary.
Energy Saving Trust (EST)
The Energy Saving Trust is a non-profit company set up by the Government with the aim of addressing the damaging effects of climate change. They work with manufacturers, retailers and consumers to promote the production and use of more energy efficient products.
The Energy Efficient Advice Centres (EEAC)
The Energy Saving Trust has a network of Energy Efficient Advice Centres located across England, Scotland and Wales which can provide householders with free expert impartial advice about saving energy in their home.
Energy Saving Recommended Labelling
EST rate the energy using efficiency of products:
- SEDBUK A rated gas boilers
- SEDBUK A and B rated oil & LPG boilers
- Central heating controls
SEDBUK stands for ‘Seasonal Efficiency of a Domestic Boiler in the UK’. The system was developed under the UK Government’s energy efficiency best practice programme with the co-operation of boiler manufacturers and provides a basis for fair comparison of different models of boilers.
The SEDBUK rating is the average annual efficiency achieved in typical domestic situations, making sensible assumptions about climate, control, pattern of usage and other similar factors.
See the SEDBUK (Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK) website for some useful facts and figures.
